RSC Prize

CMAC’s Dr Thomas McGlone has been awarded an RSC Inspirational Committee award for chairing the 4th Early Career Symposium (ECS) for chemists earlier this year. The award was presented by Professor John Holman (RSC president) last week in Belfast during the annual RSC General Assembly Award Ceremony where Thomas was joined by Sian Sloan-Dennison (Bionano) and additional ECS committee members from around the UK.

Crystal Builders @ Explorathon '16

Explorathon ’16 took place across Scotland on 30th September 2016. As part of this, a group of CMAC researchers visited Aultmore Primary School in Glasgow to give a series of demos on crystallisation and then exhibited at the Explorathon Extravaganza at Glasgow Science Centre in the evening.

Congratulations to CMAC PhD researcher Vaclav Svoboda who is a category winner at this year’s University of Strathclyde Images of Research Competition. Vaclav who is in Professor Jan Sefcik’s group, has won the “Innovative Engineering” category for his image “Hidden Colours of Crystallisation”.

GSK CEO Visit

Sir Andrew Witty, chief executive officer (CEO) of GlaxoSmithKline visited the CMAC National Facility on Monday 22nd Feb 2016. There was presentations and discussions on the research, skills, facilities and key industry translation activities followed by a tour of the facilities. He was accompanied by the Principal of University of Strathclyde Professor Sir Jim McDonald, Scottish Enterprise and senior representatives from GSK. Sir Andrew and his team were very complimentary and were impressed by the range of activities and people they met. He commented that CMAC was an exemplar of critical mass research activities.

Major project to redesign the UK’s pharmaceutical supply chains moves into next phase

The REMEDIES (RE-configuring MEDIcines End-to-end Supply) project has accelerated into its next phase following the approval of £11.2m of government funding. The project is further strengthened by an £11m contribution from industry, matching the figure raised through Round 4 of the Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative (AMSCI).

Nomination for Innovation Award 2015

CMAC has been nominated and short-listed for a Scottish Enterprise Life Sciences Award in the ‘Innovation Award’ category. There are three short-listed finalists in each category, selected by a judging panel which took in November 2014. The winners will be announced at the Scottish Life Sciences Annual Dinner in February 2015. The awards are presented to recognise excellence in companies and individuals who are making a significant contribution to the industry.

Successful New NSF-EPSRC Award Project - The International Institute for Advanced Pharmaceutical Manufacturing

CMAC has been awarded circa $1m from the SAVI seed fund including £248K from EPSRC over 3years to support the International Institute for Advanced Pharmaceutical Manufacturing. This is a joint US – UK institute that will bring together world-leading academic expertise to deliver new end-to-end continuous manufacturing capabilities that will transform global supply chain for medicines.

International Symposium on Continuous Manufacturing of Pharmaceuticals – White Papers Online

On 20th-21st May 2014, CMAC co-hosted the first International Symposium on Continuous Manufacturing of Pharmaceuticals at MIT, US. This prestigious event was attended by world leaders in continuous processing, with pharmaceutical end users, suppliers, regulators and academics who discussed accelerating adoption of continuous manufacturing for both small molecules and biological products. The key outputs of the meeting were 8 white papers which are due to be published shortly the Journal of Pharmaceutical Science. The final drafts can be found on the website.

Joint International PhD Programme with NTU

The Centre has launched a new Doctoral Training Centre in collaboration with Nanyang Technical University (NTU) Singapore. This graduate training scheme is in addition to the Centre's national EPSRC Doctoral Training Centre (DTC) and is unique in that all students involved will benefit from facilities and training at both the University of Strathclyde and NTU.

3rd EPSRC Manufacturing the Future Conference

CMAC recently hosted the nation's 3rd EPSRC Manufacturing the Future Conference at Glasgow Science Centre, chaired by Professor Alastair Florence, Academic Director of CMAC. The conference was a huge success with almost 400 delegates and has received outstanding feedback from all who attended.

The annual conference provides a national forum for UK manufacturing research community to share experience, progress and challenges in progressing UK manufacturing. The event also provided a platform for early career researchers to showcase their excellent contributions to the manufacturing research community and contribute to debate on how to move forward.
