ICT CMAC Management and Organisation

Principal Investigator – Professor Ivan Andonovic

Ivan is a Professor of Broadband Networks in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. He was the holder of a two year Royal Society Industrial Fellowship in collaboration with BT Labs during which time he investigated novel approaches to advanced networking. He has been principal investigator on six EPSRC funded projects in the area of advanced communications; has been active in determining applications of optical/wireless techniques in future network development and has been a core contributor to several key projects in all-optical networking. The EPSRC projects WASPNET, MAON, PHOTON, PIGS, OPSnet all centred on developing evolution routes to future dynamic all optical networking; he has also contributed to significant EU projects such as KEOPS. He has carried out research in all of the layers of the telecommunications stack ranging from the physical layer with core contributions to semiconductor optical amplifier developments through to advanced optical packet switching concepts. He has published over 240 journal and conference papers, edited two books and has six chapters in books. He is Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Communications, was Technical Programme Chair for ICC 2007 and Visiting Professor to Princeton University.

Science Lead – Professor Jan Sefcik

Jan Sefcik is a Professor and Deputy Head of Department of Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Strathclyde and an Academic Director of the Doctoral Training Centre in Continuous Manufacturing and Crystallisation. He graduated with the IngChem degree in Chemical Engineering from the Slovak Technical University. After a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University Minnesota he was a Postdoctoral Scholar at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena and a Senior Research Associate and Lecturer at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich before joining Strathclyde in 2005. Since 2006 he has served as an Associate Editor of a Springer journal Chemical Papers. He has supervised over 15 PhD students and published over 60 papers in peer-reviewed journals.

Jan’s research is at the interface of chemical engineering and physical chemistry, dealing with crystalline, colloidal, and nanoscale materials. The main focus is on particle formation mechanisms (nucleation), characterisation and optimisation of nanostructures (scattering) and scale up under continuous conditions (flow effects).

Co-Investigator and Director of CMAC – Professor Alastair Florence

Alastair Florence is Director of the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing and Doctoral Training Centre in Continuous Manufacturing and Crystallisation. After graduating with a B.Sc. (Hons) Pharmacy (Strathclyde, 1991) he worked in pharmaceutical manufacturing with Organon before moving into research, gaining a Ph.D in Pharmaceutical Chemistry in 1997. He was appointed to a lectureship in the Dept of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1998 and became Professor of Pharmaceutical Science in 2007. In this time he has attracted over £20M in research funding, establishing a leading pharmaceutical crystallisation and solid-state research programme. In addition to the EPSRC Centre, highlights include RCUK Basic Technology (Control and Prediction of the Organic Solid State; CPOSS) and EPSRC Science and Innovation Award in Physical Organic Chemistry programmes.

He was awarded the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Science Medal in 2004, speaks regularly at national and international conferences and has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters. He is also Conference Chair for the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences PharmSci 2013 conference.

Technical Project Manager / Researcher – Dr Alison Cleary

Alison received the MEng (with European studies) degree in Electronic Engineering with Physics in 2000 and a PhD in optical sensors in 2005, both from the Electronics and Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Glasgow. Since then, she has worked in research at the Universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde. Research topics have been largely sensor-related, and include time-resolved fluorescence measurements for monitoring the growth of silica nanoparticles, micro- and nanostructure fabrication, laser generation / detection of ultrasound and condition monitoring of wind turbine gearboxes. She joined the ICT CMAC project in August 2013.
