Opportunities and Challenges in Non-continuum and Multiscale Fluid Dynamics

Daresbury Laboratory, Warrington (near Manchester), UK
19th - 20th December 2013

There are great technological and research opportunities in fluid systems that lie right at the edge of our current understanding and simulation capabilities. Non-continuum and multiscale fluid dynamics can be critical in micro and nano systems, erosive and slurry flows, icing and freezing, droplet and bubbly flows, liquid crystals, granular, suspension, colloids, complex fluids and micro-multiphase systems, low-density and near-vacuum systems, and high-speed aerospace flows. In order to harness this fluid dynamics for technological advances there are still many issues to resolve in the thermofluids engineering - from the fundamental simulation of fluid flow and heat transfer, to the optimisation of design for fabrication. This meeting is designed to act as a focus for future collaboration, research and development of non-continuum and multiscale flow systems.

Polymorphism and Crystallization 2014

19th - 21st May 2014, Orlando Florida

Although production of new polymorphs and solvates can be a source of profit for companies through extension of the patent lifetime, the inability to manufacture a consistent crystalline form often leads to costly project delays, particularly in chemical development.

This conference will focus on these issues from the viewpoint of the process chemist and chemical engineer; i.e. on chemical development issues which impact the ability to routinely manufacture the chosen crystalline form, whether this be the most stable or a metastable crystal.

Closed Loop Optimisation of Synthesis

Dial-a-Molecule are pleased to announce the following meeting:
Closed Loop Optimisation of Synthesis

Thursday 16 April 2015, at GSK Stevenage

he optimisation of synthetic procedures is a time consuming process which is rarely carried out as efficiently as would be desirable.  Automated reaction equipment, and in-line/in-situ analytical tools are becoming more readily available, but these still rely on the chemist to set-up reactions, analyse the outcomes, and decide which experiment(s) to do next.

Join us for a discussion on how to ‘Close the Loop”, and utilise computer algorithms and automated equipment to remove the drudgery from optimising synthetic procedures.

Confirmed Plenary Speakers:  Richard Bourne (Leeds), Martyn Poliakoff (Nottingham) and Lee Cronin (Glasgow)

In addition to keynote presentations, the day will also include

Nucleation - A Transition State to the Directed Assembly of Materials

30th April - 1st May 2015, Leeds UK.

The crystallisation phase transformation process and the resulting creation of crystalline materials from liquid phase precursors are central to the science and process engineering of materials in their broadest sense. Crystallisation involves two distinct stages: nucleation and growth. Due to the nano-scale size domain within which the nucleation process functions it is a much less understood process compared to the growth process. As a result, elucidating the fundamental physics and chemistry that govern the formation and structure of the nucleation supra-molecular transition state remains one of the truly unresolved 'grand challenges' of the physical sciences.

Summer School on Crystal Shape Engineering

Summer School on Crystal Shape Engineering organized on behalf of the Working Party on Crystallization of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering

6-10 July 2015
ETH Zurich
Zurich, Switzerland

In crystallization processes the size and shape distribution of the product crystals has a decisive impact on properties such as processability and bio- availability (in the case of active pharmaceutical ingredients).
Obtaining the desired particle size and shape distribution of crystals requires a deep understanding of molecular properties, crystallography, nucleation and growth mechanisms, process modeling through multi-dimensional population balance equations, advanced monitoring tools and process control techniques.
Crystal shape engineering has emerged as a very dynamic, challenging and fascinating area of research in crystallization science and engineering, with growing interest and importance for industrial applications.

The school "Crystal Shape Engineering" offers a compact education in the science and technology of crystal shape engineering. It is offered to scholars and practitioners active in crystallization science and technology, who want to deepen their understanding of issues around crystal size and shape and to learn these from among the top scientists in the field. CMAC Seminar @ Strathclyde - Prof Harris Makatsoris (Cranfield)

Seminar: On 27th April 2016 at 1.30-3.00pm in TIC, University of Strathclyde

Robot chemists, artificial creativity and self-evolving chemical systems: the evolution of science or science fiction?

Professor Harris Makatsoris, Cranfield University

How will chemical sciences change over the next 30 to 50 years? Specifically, how will the design and development of high value chemical products will take place in the future? These are questions that both EPSRC Grand Challenge Networks Directed Assembly and Dial A Molecule have posed to the chemistry and chemical engineering communities. The roadmaps both networks produced describe developments in the tools and workflows employed that could potentially transform chemical science as a ‘data driven discipline’. The Directed Assembly roadmap for example discusses how nature-inspired processes could lead to the development of novel approaches and tools for the control of molecular assemblies in the solid state to obtain materials with targeted functionality. The Nobel Laureate in Physics, Frank Wilczek, recently predicted that in 100 years’ time the best physicist will be a machine. We currently experience significant innovation in processing equipment. In particular, the use of intelligent automation in chemical discovery and materials design and development is rapidly increasing. It may therefore take considerably less time than that when we could see machines with sufficient intelligence undertaking some discovery or design tasks with little or no human supervision. In this talk Prof Makatsoris will report on what is involved in making such intelligent machines, what’s possible now and in the future and  will present what his group is working on in this domain.

Continuous Crystallization of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients

Steven Ferguson

School of Chemical & Bioprocess Engineering, University College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland.

Development efforts over the past decade have resulted in huge advances in continuous manufacturing aimed at pharmaceutical scales of operation; with all continuous operations showing significant progress. The first end to end continuous production run of an API (Aliskerin) from an intermediate right through formulation to final tableting was demonstrated in 2012.1  Continuous crystallization  is no exception in this regard with a variety of designs and strategies that enable continuous crystallizations to be successfully implemented on pharmaceutical scales of operation outlined in the literature.  1, 2, ,3, 4, 5, , 6, 7 This is essential for  the uptake of continuous manufacturing  in pharmaceuticals where crystallization is the preferred method of API isolation and purification and also utilized to generate the final solid form and API properties for formulation of drug product.8

The most popular approaches to continuous crystallization for pharmaceuticals that have emerged can be broken down into three main categories; standard plug flow/tubular crystallizers, continuous stirred tanks and finally tubular designs with imposed mixing to increase allowable residence time. Both types of tubular/plug flow crystallizers have ideally no or limited back mixing. This means that they operate at steady state with respect to time but not with spatial position within the crystallizer. As such the dynamics of continuous tubular crystallizations are identical to that of the of a batch crystallization except progressing with respect to residence time rather than batch time. Continuous stirred tank crystallizations, often referred to as MSMPR type crystallizers, are perfectly backmixed, which means that they operate at steady state with respect to both time and spatial position.

This results in continuous operation at a non-equilibrium steady state which poses some interesting challenges and opportunities in the design of this type of continuous crystallizations. Stirred tank crystallizers (MSMPRs) have been demonstrated to selectively crystallize both stable and metastable polymorphs via a kinetically controlled crystallization.9 Operation of a MSMPR so that (non-equilibrium) steady state concentration has supersaturating with respect to both polymorphs eliminates solution mediated phase transformation. The process then becomes purely kinetically controlled allowing robust production of metastable forms as well as the thermodynamically stable forms in a given solvent system.9 Similarly, non-equillibrium steady states also enable attainment of higher enantiomeric purity that in batch crystallizations. 10 Per pass yield reductions associated with operation at non-equilibrium steady states can be eliminate by recycling of mother liquor and operation at conditions more preferential for crystal growth. 11,12,13 Finally, a wider range of potential CSDs and particle morphologies can be accessed when continuous crystallizations are considered. 4, 14, 15,16, 17, 18
