CMAC Annual Open Day 2015

The CMAC Annual Open Day 2015 took place on 23rd and 24th September 2015 at the Technology and Innovation Centre (TIC), University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. The event hosted over 230 delegates from over 50 organisations. The programme included 30 presentations including talks from key industry and invited academic speakers, over 70 posters, and over 22 exhibits from leading technology companies. Over 70 guests were given tours of the new CMAC National Facility housed in TIC.

Prof Florence explained “Since the Centre was formed in 2011 the annual Open Day has been our flagship event aimed at bringing the wider community with interests in continuous manufacturing and crystallisation together to hear from leading voices in the field, learn more about research projects underway across the Centre and Doctoral Training Centre and to network with colleagues from across industry and academia. This event also marks a significant milestone for the Centre, being the first Open Day in the new Technology & Innovation Centre (TIC) at the University of Strathclyde. This year’s Open Day also marks the completion of the £33.4m Research Partnership Investment Fund and Wolfson Foundation investments that are enabling CMAC to establish an open access National Facility for manufacturing research. In addition to meeting with other national and international academic groups, technology companies, SMEs and major multi-national end-users who are attending or presenting.”

Royal Opening of TIC

Her Majesty the Queen officially opened the new Technology and Innovation Centre (TIC) at University of Strathclyde on Friday 3rd July. During her visit to TIC the Queen toured the CMAC laboratories with Academic Director Professor Alastair Florence, Industry Director Craig Johnston and Chair of CMAC Board Dr Clive Badman OBE (GSK). The Queen met with CMAC Tier 1 Partners: Dr Chris Jones and Jon-Paul Sherlock (AstraZeneca), Dr Olaf Queckenberg (Bayer), and Dr Mark Buswell (GSK) as well as Academics and Researchers, and was shown some of the £11.4M of new equipment that has been purchased using the RPIF Award. Bayer: New Tier 1 Partners for CMAC

We are delighted that Bayer HealthCare has formally joined CMAC as a tier 1 member, joining founding members AZ, GSK and Novartis. Bayer Healthcare's key reasons for joining are their technical interest in CMAC's pre competitive and 1to1 projects, access to talent pipeline and research quality. Also CMAC acts as an efficient portal to broader activities internationally. Bayer also hosted the 14th CMAC board meeting in Leverkusen in May at their Invite facility. Their wholly owned subsidiary Bayer Technology Services has also joined CMAC as a tier 2 member.

National Facility Open For Business

CMAC moved into the new Technology and Innovation Centre (TIC) at the University of Strathclyde in late March 2015. The recent commissioning of the new labs in TIC will establish the new National Facility for Continuous Manufacturing & Crystallisation Research for Pharmaceutical Products. The National Facility will offer the continuous manufacturing research community and external parties/SMEs the chance to use our new state of the art research facilities.

Contact national- facility@cmac.ac.uk for more information. Flyer is available here.

Recruitment

National Facility Posts

To support the commisioning and operation of the CMAC National Facility we are due to recruit 11 new posts. Initially we appoint a Facility Manager and recruit 4 technicians. CMAC would like to invite candidates who intend to apply to send informal enquires to national- facility@cmac.ac.uk.

Keep an eye on our Vacancies page.

Industrial Placements Case Study: Kate Wittering Visits AstraZeneca

Kate Wittering (final year PhD, Bath University) has recently completed a 3 month placement with Dr Sophie Janbon at AstraZeneca, Macclesfield where she was able to work on both live AZ projects as well as continue her own PhD research. Her experience working with the “Right Particle” team gave Kate a real insight into how particle formation and controlling its attributes are critical to delivering high quality medicines.

Kate was able to work on a live AZ compound to further optimise the continuous system that Dr Anna Jawor-Baczynska had initially developed during her placement at AZ in 2013 (Anna did such a good job that AZ subsequently recruited her!). As part of this work, Kate ran demonstrations for AZ staff discussing various pros and cons of the system as well as significantly enhancing the profile of continuous processing and crystallisation within AZ’s development groups.

CMAC Mentor Groups

The CMAC mentor scheme has been relaunched this year to enhance industry – academia knowledge exchange. This scheme is key for delivering industrially led research through detailed interactions in all technology areas.

The regular meetings provide a mechanism for 2-way interactions:

Industrialists are able share experience and provide guidance to the research projects ensuring industrial relevance and providing a context for the research.
A conduit for novel research approaches, methods and equipment from academia to be transferred and directly applied on live industry projects.

This close interaction facilitates matching students with companies for industrial placements and helps CMAC produce DTC researchers with industrially relevant knowledge and skills. The growth of CMAC means that the scheme now comprises 7 groups with over 60 CMAC researchers and 25 industrialists involved. The mentors were initially from tier 1 companies, with tier 2 companies and collaborator companies becoming involved over the summer.

Want to know more or become involved in the mentor scheme, then please contact Dr Ian Houson on ian.houson@strath.ac.uk

REMEDIES

The REMEDIES (RE-configuring MEDIcines End- to-end Supply) project is headed up by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) It brings together key players in the end-to-end supply chain, including major contract manufacturing organisations, equipment manufacturers along with regulators, knowledge transfer networks and healthcare providers. IfM at Cambridge is the academic lead. Strathclyde leads on continuous API project and is technical partner in formulation project which is led by AstraZeneca (primary to secondary).

Talent Pipeline

New Starts

Ten new staff have started work in CMAC since Easter 2015. We also currently have two visiting researchers seconded to TIC For details of the posts please click here. Additionally, new Cohorts of 18 MSc students, 10 DTC students and 4 other PhD students have started in October 2015.

Next Steps

Naomi Briggs left at the end of May 2015 to go to MIT having completed her PhD with CMAC in 2014 and also worked with us during 2014-2015 as Project Technician to deliver the RPIF project.

Nina Denver, lab technician in TIC at Strathclyde left in August 2015 having secured a PhD place at University of Glasgow.
