CMAC White Papers Now Available Online

First Minister Meets CMAC at TIC Celebration

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon attended the TIC Soft Opening Celebration event in December and was delighted to meet some of our CMAC researchers. Hosted by the Principle, Professor Sir Jim McDonald the event provided its occupants with a sneak peek inside Scotland’s world leading Technology Innovation Centre.

CMAC Shortlisted for Innovation Award 2015

CMAC were nominated and shortlisted for a Scottish Enterprise Life Sciences Award in the ‘Innovation Award’ category. With three shortlisted finalists in each category, selected by the judging panel, the winners were announced at the Scottish Life Sciences Annual Dinner in February 2015. The awards are presented to recognise excellence in companies and individuals who are making a significant contribution to the industry.

CMAC Innovations in Continuous Work-up Workshop

On Wednesday 18 March, twenty five industrialists, academics and interested parties form CPI and the KTN attended a workshop to showcase the 6 iCON projects funded by the EPSRC National Centre. The iCON projects were conceived to stimulate research and interest in areas that are not currently active in the CMAC research programme but are key to driving the uptake of continuous processing.

The morning comprised 6 stimulating presentations from Frans Muller (University of Leeds), Alexei Lapkin Cambridge University), Svetlana Ignatova Brunel University), Paulo Filliponi (Ian Baxendale group, University of Durham), Andrea Rayat and Mike Hoare (UCL), Eric Sliwinski (Steve Ley group, Cambridge University). The afternoon was spent assessing the current landscape identifying key gaps, areas requiring continual improvement and other groups/companies who are active in this area. There was also time for networking and detailed 1:1 discussions.

Next steps: CMAC will collate the output and prepare a short report to be shared with attendees and any other interested parties and use this to drive and influence funders in this under-researched area.

CMAC Mentor Group Meetings

All of the mentor groups are now up and running having had at least 1 meeting with face-to-face meetings either held or booked in the next month. Two face-to-face meetings have been held:

Controlling Growth and Morphology mentor group held at Bath University: with 3 industrialists from GSK and AZ with researchers from Heriot Watt, Edinburgh and Bath we met on a sunny February for a very stimulating day of discussion, presentations and a really interesting tour of the labs looking at the novel small scale continuous crystallisation equipment that is being developed there.

Nucleation mentor group at the University of Edinburgh: On Thursday 19 March, 11 of us met at Edinburgh University to discuss the work that is ongoing in CMAC in the NPLIN and secondary nucleation area. With presentations from the Pulham, Sefcik and Alexander group researchers it was full day of valuable discussion and a live demonstration of NPLIN. Input and presentations from industrialists from GSK and AZ gave in insight into their careers, interests and really highlighted the fact that even though our aim is to work in a continuous environment, much of the work is directly applicable in their daily jobs and to batch processes as well.

The industrial mentor groups have seen a large growth in the last year and this summer will comprise ~50PhD students, 13 PDRAs, 12 academics and 31 industrial mentors.

CMAC Are Moving to TIC

CMAC will move into the new Technology and Innovation Centre (TIC) at the University of Strathclyde in late March 2015. The move into the new labs in TIC will establish the new National Facility for Continuous Manufacturing & Crystallisation Research for Pharmaceutical Products. The National Facility will offer the continuous manufacturing research community and external parties / SMEs the chance to use our new state of the art research facilities.

It is anticipated that by mid-April the vast majority of research will resume in the new world-class facility. Additional space has been allocated to CMAC within TIC on Level 6and will accommodate the process development lab, X-ray suite and TOF-SIMS lab and requires fit-out works to make it fit for purpose. On level 1 we will have surface analysis facilities.

We are pleased to announce that as a result of equipment revisions on the RPIF Award and a detailed space planning exercise, CMAC will now house all secondary processing equipment on level 8 within TIC, which will allow a seamless transition between primary and secondary processing activities.

CMAC National Facility Progress

Awarded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE)'s UK Research Partnership Investment Fund (UKRPIF) CMAC received £11.4M cash and supported with £22.8m industry and charity contributions. The award is funding the purchase of equipment to fit out the National Facility for Continuous Manufacturing & Crystallisation Research for Pharmaceutical Products and staff to support this. Nina Denver and Thomas Ball, who have both recently joined CMAC as Technicians, will support the lab manager in preparation and implementation of the move to TIC. The last major tender to be awarded is concentrated on expanding our capability in the X-ray suite. An X-ray Nano-CT instrument will allow us to non-destructively visualise inside a variety of objects, be it inhalers, tablets or crystals. New X-ray diffraction instruments will aid our understanding of crystal structure and powder analysis.

CMAC will have an extensive capability in the areas of primary and secondary processing, process analytical technologies (PAT), spectroscopy, imaging, size and shape analysis, X-ray diffraction, and physical properties characterisation. Our new website and promotional material will highlight the available instruments and the capability offered.

Talent Pipeline

Project Manager App A REMEDIES - John Mulgrew

John joined CMAC as Project Manager for technology application projects, focusing on continuous manufacturing of APIs with large pharma, contract manufacturing organisations and technology companies. John provides support for our Industry Director and management expertise to support AMSCI AppA. His industrial career spans 20 years, working as an engineering and capital project management consultant for companies such as Amgen, J&J McNeil, Baxter Healthcare, Merck, Wyeth (Pfizer), Shire, Talecris, Tengion and most recently as Manager, Facilities and Project Engineering at Integra Life Science.

Senior Research Fellow App B REMEDIES - Dr John Robertson

John joined CMAC in September 2014 and has a background in novel technology development for pharmaceutical applications. Currently, John is supporting the development of capability in the secondary pharmaceutical processing area. He previously worked for GlaxoSmithKline for 16 years in a number of technical roles including development of continuous secondary processing, particle engineering, drug delivery and SCF technologies. John is a Chartered Chemical Engineer, originally studying Engineering at Strathclyde and then moving to Birmingham to undertake a PhD with SmithKline Beecham, followed by an industrially funded post doctorate position. His areas of interest are in solids processing, formulation and particle design. John also teaches process engineering for apprentices in the pharmaceutical industry.

PDRA Sefcik Group University of Strathclyde – Dr Pol MacFhionnghaile

Dr Pol MacFhionnghaile joined CMAC in Jan Sefcik’s group as a research associate in February 2015. Previous to this he worked in AbbVie (formally Abbott) as a Process Chemist looking at statistical methods to better understand some processes. Before that he worked as a teacher in the Centre for Talented Youth where he taught children physics, chemistry, and maths. Pol graduated from the National University of Ireland, Galway with a PhD in using chemometrics coupled with analytical techniques to investigate solid state changes of sulfa-drugs.

CMAC participation in British Council Workshop, Novosibirsk, Siberia

From 9-13th February 2015 Dr Thomas McGlone, (CMAC PDRA, University of Strathclyde), Dr Karen Robertson (CMAC PDRA, University of Bath) and Adam Michalchuk (DTC, University of Edinburgh) attended ‘Molecular Materials – from fundamentals to applications’ in Novosibirsk, Siberia.

This early career researcher scientific workshop was sponsored by the British Council and the RSC and was co-organised by CMAC’s PI Prof. Colin Pulham and Prof. Elena Boldyreva (Novosibirsk University).

Esteemed colleagues in our field including Prof. Sally Price (CPOSS), Prof Joel Bernstein and Prof Bill Jones (CMAC Advisory Board) were in attendance. Find out more here.

Awards and prizes

Dr Thomas McGlone CMAC PDRA, University of Strathclyde, recently secured a place on a European Young Chemists Networks scheme called ‘Young Chemists Crossing Borders’. The scheme includes attendance and a presentation at the 250th ACS conference in Boston (August 2015) in addition to visits to MIT, Harvard, Novartis and Genzyme.

Jo Lothian, a researcher in Alison Nordon’s group at Strathclyde went on secondment to GSK at the end of 2014. The 4-month project included work using Eyecon imaging equipment to monitor Twin Screw Granulation processes. Jo won a GSK initiative award at GSK for solving fouling issues on her project.
