Centre Director - Professor Alastair Florence
Pharmaceutical scientist with expertise in crystallisation and crystallisation screening of pharmaceuticals and other molecular solids and in approaches to the discovery, characterisation and control of physical forms including polymorphs, solvates, salts, co-crystals and amorphous solids. A key focus is on the physical analysis of crystalline and polycrystalline solids to study the influence of crystallisation conditions, processing, temperature and other factors on their structure and properties in pure and formulated states. Industrial Director - Craig Johnston
Fellow of the Institute of Chemical Engineers. His industrial career spans 22 years, working for ICI, Zeneca, Avecia and Fujifilm. Roles included technical, production, start-up management and technology leadership. Responsibilities included new product introduction, process improvement, project definition, capital expenditure and novel process technology evaluation. He was a board director with Britest Ltd (2006-2011) an industry / academic consortium focussed on adding value through process understanding and design. He is currently chair of Chemical Sciences Scotland Innovation Group. EPSRC Centre Manager - Dr Andrea Johnston
A solid-state chemist with expertise in the area of crystallisation and physical form screening in terms of identifying new polymorphs, solvates or co-crystals and performing full physical analyses of crystalline forms. Andrea also has a keen interest in the use of chemoinformatics in both rationalising experiments for physical form screening and determining which parameters are governing crystalline outcome. Project Manager REMEDIES - John Mulgrew
John has joined CMAC as Project Manager for technology application projects focusing on continuous manufacturing of APIs with large pharma, contract manufacturing organisations and technology companies. John provides support for our Industry Director and management expertise to support AMSCI AppA. His industrial career spans 20 years, working as an engineering and capital project management consultant for companies such as Amgen, J&J McNeil, Baxter Healthcare, Merck, Wyeth (Pfizer), Shire, Talecris, Tengion and most recently as Manager, Facilities and Project Engineering at Integra Life Science.

Project Manager - Dr Stewart Mitchell
Stewart joined CMAC in August 2015 as project manager focused on Tier 2 companies, to understand develop and integrate their expertise within CMAC operations. He has a PhD in Sonochemistry from Abertay University with over 20yrs industrial experience within a number of different companies and different sites, cultures, and technologies.He has worked mainly in GMP drug substance development and manufacture both at pilot plant and full scale manufacture mainly within CMO organisations with operational, project and site leadership roles in the UK and the USA; Abbott Laboratories, ChiRex, Rhodia, Shasun, Piramal, and ThermoFisher Scientific (Microbiology Division). More recently he worked with the Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre (IBioIC) within the University of Strathclyde as the Business Development Manager during the initial start-up phase and subsequent development and growth of the new Innovation Centre. Helen joined CMAC in 2014 and has a degree in Chemistry from University of St. Andrews and 14 years experience working in medicinal chemistry research for Organon / MSD Newhouse. Responsible for supporting Centre Manager. International Collaboration Co-ordinator – Claire Ordoyno
Claire joined CMAC in July 2015 as International Collaboration Coordinator, and manages collaborative research and knowledge exchange across international centres, with a primary focus on I2APM activities. With a background in analytical chemistry and formulation science, Claire has fifteen years' experience working in a variety of different areas within the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, in both technical and project management roles. She has previously worked in both academia and industry, with roles at SIPBS and CPACT at the University at Strathclyde, Avecia, ProPharma, Evotec, Aptuit and most recently as Research Project Manager at Drug Delivery International. Lorna joined the EPSRC Centre in September 2012 as Centre Administrator providing admin support to the management team. Postgraduate Development Administrator – Karen Graham
Karen joined CMAC in October 2016. She has worked in the higher education sector for 8 years in a variety of different positions and institutions, including External Relations and Events, PGR Support, and Departmental Administration. She has undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from the University of Dundee and the University of Aberdeen in Literature and Religious Studies. The PG Development Administrator provides administrative support to the Centre Director, DTC Academic Director, DTC Programme and MSc Co-ordinator. Responsibilities include recruitment / marketing for DTC; organisation of training programmes (handbook, timetables), travel, meetings, annual summer school; reconciling expenditure, modelling / monitoring DTC budgets; maintenance of student database; assistance with media management. National Facility Manager - Dr Stewart McCandless

Stewart has joined CMAC in the role of National Facility Manager responsible for the operation of the new CMAC National Facility located in the TIC (Technology Innovation Centre) building. Prior to this, Stewart worked in the Pharmaceutical Industry for 28 years in a wide variety of roles which covered: Primary & Secondary Manufacturing, Secondary Packaging, Technical Development, New Product Introduction and Clinical Trials Packaging & Distribution. The majority of this time has been spent in Operational Management with a particular interest in the growth of Continuous Improvement methodologies such as Toyota Kata and Lean Manufacturing. Before entering the world of work, Stewart studied Chemistry at the University of Dundee and received a Ph.D. from Heriot-Watt University. |

Claire joined CMAC National Facility in June 2016, she has a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Glasgow and her background is working in product development and product management in the medical device industry. Laboratory Manager (Interim)- Dr Thomas McGlone
Chemistry MSci Graduate from the University of Glasgow. He also completed his PhD at Glasgow under the supervision of Professor Lee Cronin within the area of inorganic synthesis, crystallisation and characterisation. Thomas joined CMAC in 2011 as a knowledge exchange postdoctoral researcher, working with Fujifilm and Syngenta. He then worked with the CMAC Tier 1 companies, GSK, Novartis and Astrazeneca on the Exquisite particles project. All of these projects investigated the feasibility of moving from batch to continuous crystallisation including practical aspects such as fouling. Thomas then joined the core Phase II CMAC centre programme, working to develop a workflow for the design of a continuous crystallisation process. An additional interest is process analytical technology and how this can be applied to monitor crystallisation processes. Thomas is now currently the interim laboratory manager for the CMAC National Facility and is responsible for health and safety, inductions, equipment maintenance and overall support for the broad range of on-going projects. Senior Instrument Scientist - Dr Cameron Brown
Senior Instrument Scientist - Dr Humera Siddique
Humera completed her chemical engineering and masters in process engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, Pakistan. She also completed her PhD at Imperial College London under the supervision of Professor Andrew. G. Livingston within the area of nanofiltration membrane synthesis, characterisation and development of continuous filtration process using nanofiltration membranes. Humera joined CMAC in 2013 as a postdoctoral researcher for TSB projects MOPPS and innovative modular platforms, working with two tier 1 companies Astra Zeneca and GSK and tier 2 companies Perceptive Engineering and Black trace Ltd. She worked with the Perceptive Engineering on the development of model predictive control on various crystallisation platforms. She also worked with BASF for development of a continuous crystallisation process for one of their active ingredient. All of these projects investigated the feasibility of moving from batch to continuous crystallisation including practical aspects such as fouling, seeding and final product attributes. Humera then joined the core Phase II CMAC centre programme, working on the development of continuous crystallisation process for active pharmaceutical ingredient using CMAC crystallisation work flow.

Senior Continuous Processing and Analysis Engineer - Vishal Raval
Vishal has postgraduate degree in Masters in Energy from the Heriot Watt University and has Bachelor of Chemical Engineering from India . He has in total 9 year working experience in lab and pilot scale continuous crystallisation, Vishal Joined CMAC in 2010 as research assistant to support range of contract research activity within CMAC. In 2013 Vishal’s role changed to Platform Technician to support center’s day to day activity in lab, equipment maintenance, new continuous platform development, he was also heavily involved in procurement of range of ancillary and in-line PAT equipment’s under EPSRC RPIF’s Equipment grant award. Vishal's main expertise lies in debottlenecking the technical problems and addressing troubleshooting with main research interest in developing, characterising and operating continuous platforms. Vishal has joined CMAC National Facility in April 2016 as Senior Continuous Processing and Analysis Engineer and his primary responsibilities are to support broad range of contract projects, looking after national facility's day to day activities, equipment/lab maintenance and to support center researchers broad range of lab activities. X-Ray Facility Research Technician – Dr Alan Martin
Joining CMAC in 2016, Alan obtained a Masters degree in Chemistry from the University of Glasgow and completed his PhD at the University of Bath in 2013 under Professor Chick Wilson, researching the utilisation of co-crystallisation and hosting methodologies to stabilise reactive materials in the solid state with a primary focus on using predictable hydrogen bonding motifs, whilst taking advantage of X-ray powder diffraction extensively as a screening tool and single crystal X-ray diffraction to characterise new materials produced. Alan also has over two years of experience in the analysis of the performance of scale inhibiting chemicals for the oilfield industry, working for an independent testing laboratory, with a particular focus on barite and carbonate scales. Alan’s primary responsibility is for the running of the CMAC’s world leading X-Ray diffraction facilities at Strathclyde University Technology and Innovation Centre. Physical Analysis Research Technician - Dr Deborah Bowering
Deborah joins CMAC as a research technician, to support physical analysis activities at the National Facility. She has a PhD in Materials Engineering and Design from the University of Nottingham, and 9 years of experience in industrial laboratory settings including Physical Chemist at Fujifilm Imaging Colorants, and most recently as Laboratory Supervisor for Johnson Matthey Fuel Cells. In her role at CMAC, Deborah will be working on a range of surface analysis and materials characterisation equipment within the facility, aiding researchers and collaborators in routine solid-state and physical properties analysis. Tanushree (Tanu) joined CMAC in June 2016. She has an MBA degree in Marketing from Gujarat University and 13 years wide ranging experience of working in banking, local authority and research environments. Tanu is responsible for managing the administration of the World-Class National Facility, providing full independent organisational and administrative support to the National Facility Manager and the team. Her main responsibilities include assisting the National Facility Manager on operational and strategic issues relating to the development, management and delivery of the National Facility.
