Eli Lilly Vacancy: Synthetic Molecule Design and Development Automated Crystallisation Development

For more info or to apply, please contact: merritt_jeremy_miles@lilly.com

Synthetic Molecule Design and Development (SMDD) is an innovation-focused organization within Eli Lilly and Company. SMDD is involved in key activities for the development of synthetic active pharmaceutical ingredients and drug products from pre-clinical phases through commercialization. Our dynamic group is made up of chemists, pharmaceutical scientists, analytical chemists, and engineers. We strive to identify, develop and apply groundbreaking technologies to deliver maximum benefit to our patients. SMDD delivers on these responsibilities by recognizing diverse talent and cultures are necessary to bring the next generation of life changing medicines to patients.

Our team is looking for an ambitious post-doctoral scientist with strong research and communication skills to contribute to highly visible research projects.  You will reside in the Particle Design Laboratory (PDL) within SMDD, which serves as a core competency center for particle and crystallization process design.   Your work will improve our strategies for solid-form isolation of small molecule APIs through both basic and applied research. In this role, you will:

  • Design, integrate and deploy a novel automated experimental setup for crystallization and slurry milling to extract fundamental information for process design in an autonomous way.
  • Develop a 2D morphological population balance model to predict crystal growth, dissolution and morphology evolution during crystallization, dissolution and milling operations and compare the results with other state of the art modeling approaches.
  • Develop a control strategy for particle size and morphology manipulation. Deploy combined experimental and modeling approaches to achieve an automated process implementation.
  • Apply insight gained from basic research to develop a workflow to efficiently design crystallization processes.
  • Sit at the exciting interface between drug substance (the active pharmaceutical ingredient or API) and drug product to see how physical properties of powders can impact the development of drugs.
  • Build first in class workflows to automate process development in particle engineering field.
  • Focus on defining robust strategies to account for API’s unique chemistry and crystallization kinetics for API isolation and impurity rejection.
  • Learn to manipulate the physical properties of powders through particle design.
  • Apply a data driven strategy for decision making
  • Build a diverse, multi-functional network through collaboration both within Lilly and with external partners.
  • Publish and present relevant research findings both within Lilly and externally.
  • Keep abreast of relevant scientific literature/new technologies/capabilities

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in chemical engineering, physical chemistry, mechanical engineering, materials engineering or a related field

About Eli Lilly’s Postdoctoral Scientist Program:

When it comes to research and development, our goal is to discover and deliver innovative medicines that make life better for people around the world. It’s challenging, expensive and often filled with failure. But even when we fail, we advance medical science and understanding by learning more about diseases, biology and chemistry – ultimately bringing new solutions one step closer to reality.

Over the course of our history, we have shed light on some of the toughest health care problems known to man – diabetes, heart disease, infectious diseases, neuroscience disorders, cancer and more. We could not pursue this without our research and development team.

Postdoctoral scientists help us continue this pursuit. During your experience you will get:

  • Top industry research experience
  • Mentoring by some of Lilly’s top scientists
  • Laboratory and classroom training and education to further your development
  • Collaboration and networking across dozens of postdoctoral scientists and other researchers
