The Continuous Manufacturing and Advanced Crystallisation (CMAC, www.cmac.ac.uk) hub at the University of Strathclyde in partnership with AstraZeneca is seeking to appoint a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Associate in the area of X-ray Pair Distribution Function (PDF) analysis. In particular, the role is focussed on the application of PDF to AstraZeneca materials and the focus of the role is on developing approaches for routine sample preparation, laboratory and synchrotron data collection, PDF analysis, reporting and development of training material to enable and support users to implement successfully this powerful analytical method.

You will have a PhD in a chemistry, materials science, physics, pharmaceutical science or a related discipline with appropriate experience in a collaborative research environment with knowledge in the area of pharmaceutical materials, X-ray scattering, data analysis and solid form characterisation. Practical experience of working with amorphous materials and in the use of laboratory X-ray and/or synchrotron sources and in the analysis and interpretation of data will be advantageous.
You must have excellent verbal and written communications skills with the ability to write clearly and succinctly. You must also be able to work as a member of a team, as well as demonstrate successful track record of research achievement. You should be able to independently develop new concepts in your research, have excellent organisational skills, initiative, and the ability to pay close attention to details. In addition to the KTP core development training, you will have a dedicated training budget of £4,000 to further support your career development. Location of this role, the Associate will be expected to work mostly at AstraZeneca’s Research & Development Campus in Macclesfield, however will be required to work at the University of Strathclyde for a period of time.

The PhD Training Opportunity at CMAC
This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic research team based at the University of Strathclyde and working closely with GlaxoSmithKline and collaborators within the Continuous Manufacturing and Advanced Crystallisation Hub (CMAC), gain experience of a range of techniques as part of your research. This project is also supported through The Data Lab which will provide world-class training in data science.
Researchers working on CMAC projects have a great opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research in world class facilities, explore academic and industrial collaborations, experience working in industry through placements, and receive multidisciplinary training and mentoring that will help them develop into well-rounded professionals. The structure of a PhD project with CMAC includes a period of initial training and familiarisation with the Hub’s activities, participation in summer schools, outreach events, mentoring schemes, and supervision from academic and industrial advisers.

Use computational techniques (including matched molecular pair analysis, full interaction maps, solvation energy calculations and hydrogen bonding propensity analyses) to compare and rank new molecules against existing three-dimensional crystal structures (such as those in the Cambridge Crystallographic Database (CSD)).
Conduct Crystal Structure Prediction (CSP) calculations and free energy calculations for polymorph stability ranking.
Make recommendations for targeted crystallization experiments and/or modifications to the molecular structure to provide enhanced physical properties and stability of the material in the solid state.
Oversee the work of external partners conducting computational analyses, and provide tactical guidance and critical analysis of their work.
Solve scientific problems using contemporary solid state computational techniques.
Participate on multidisciplinary project teams, and collaborate with colleagues to define and recommend screening and characterization strategies according to project timelines.
Lead the development of new scientific approaches and knowledge within the global Material Sciences organization. This is an individual contributor role.
