RSC Prize

CMAC’s Dr Thomas McGlone (University of Strathclyde) has been awarded an RSC Inspirational Committee award for chairing the 4th Early Career Symposium (ECS) for chemists earlier this year. The award was presented by Professor John Holman (RSC president) last week in Belfast during the annual RSC General Assembly Award Ceremony where Thomas was joined by Sian Sloan-Dennison (Bionano group at Strathclyde) and additional ECS committee members from around the UK.

Crystal Builders @ Explorathon '16

Explorathon ’16 took place across Scotland on 30th September 2016.  As part of this, a group of CMAC researchers visited Aultmore Primary School in Glasgow to give a series of demos on crystallisation and then exhibited at the Explorathon Extravaganza at Glasgow Science Centre in the evening. 

The crystal builders demo proved to be very popular and used 14kg of marshmallows and 3000 cocktail sticks! Well done to the team Andrew Dunn, Alex Cousen, Alice Turner, Clarissa Forbes, Elanor Brammer, Rebekah Russell, Sarahjane Wood.

Strathclyde Medal

Congratulations to Dr Ian Houson, CMAC Technical Project Manager who received a Strathclyde Medal to recognise people who have made an important contribution to the Universityof Strathclyde  values in their work, relationships and achievements.

He was one of 12 award winners from over 100 applications. Although Ian demonstrated all the values – People-Oriented, Bold, Innovative, Collaborative and Ambitious - He was nominated for his leading work in academic and industry collaboration.

Ian received his award from the Principal at a ceremony on Friday 2nd September in the Barony Hall. Ian's wife Ruth joined in the celebration.

Well Done Ian!

Images of Research Category Win

Congratulations to CMAC PhD researcher Vaclav Svoboda who is a category winner at this year’s University of Strathclyde Images of Research Competition.  Vaclav who is in Professor Jan Sefcik’s group, has won the “Innovative Engineering” category for his image “Hidden Colours of Crystallisation”.

Well done also to research associate Rene Steendam, who is in CMAC Academic Joop Ter Horst’s group, was runner up in the “Size Matters” category with his Image “Manufacturing the Right Crystals”.

The Overall winner is decided by the public who are invited to vote for the overall winner between now and 14th June 2016. To vote click here. The overall winner will be announced on 15th June at the Images of Research Awards Ceremony which will take place at Drygate. Please vote for Vaclav’s image!

Images of Research is an annual competition at University of Strathclyde that  offers a unique opportunity to captivate an audience through an eye catching image, and successful entries are offered the chance to showcase their research to a public audience of thousands throughout the West of Scotland. GSK CEO Visit

Sir Andrew Witty, chief executive officer (CEO) of GlaxoSmithKline visited the CMAC National Facility on Monday 22nd Feb 2016. There were presentations and discussions on the research, skills, facilities and key industry translation activities followed by a tour of the facilities. He was accompanied by the Principal of University of Strathclyde Professor Sir Jim McDonald, Scottish Enterprise and senior representatives from GSK. Sir Andrew and his team were very complimentary and were impressed by the range of activities and people they met. He commented that CMAC was an exemplar of critical mass research activities.

Funding Announcement: Digital Design and Manufacture of Amorphous Pharmaceuticals (DDMAP)
CMAC are excited to announce the new £1.2M award from EPSRC to lead the new international collaboration for Digital Design and Manufacture of Amorphous Pharmaceuticals (DDMAP).



This award brings together three world-leading research groups from the UK (CMAC, University of Strathclyde), Denmark (CPHarma, University of Copenhagen) and Belgium (CESPE, Ghent University) to deliver a step change in fundamental understanding of amorphous materials that will apply to real industrial challenges in medicines manufacturing. This unique centre will create a dynamic collaboration across Europe that will embrace open science and offer multi-disciplinary and multi-organisational research engagement. .... more
