CMAC National Facility Co-ordinator (382021)
The EPSRC Continuous Manufacturing and Advanced Crystallisation Future Manufacturing Research Hub (www.cmac.ac.uk) is a national research centre led by the University of Strathclyde. It comprises a large, multidisciplinary team of academics and researchers located across seven Universities within the UK. The Hub provides a platform for collaborative research, training and knowledge exchange in advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing to make better, more affordable medicines for the future. The Hub also has a large and vibrant programme with key Industry partners AZ, Chiesi, Lilly, Pfizer, Roche, Pfizer, Takeda and UCB as well as technology companies.
This world-class facility has been established through support from a £33.4M UK RPIF award plus major support from the Wolfson Foundation, EPSRC and the £100M University of Strathclyde Technology & Innovation Centre (TIC). The facility houses a comprehensive suite of high-value, state-of-the-art equipment. In addition, the facility is enhancing our ability to support effective collaboration by co-locating researchers from across CMAC and our partners to work together.
The facility team provides comprehensive support across the varied and complex equipment base. This team supports a growing user community to access the suite of over 200 items of equipment within a multi-project, multi-user context both academic and industrial.
Applications are invited from experienced administrators seeking a challenging role within the National Facility. The successful applicant will provide organisational and administrative support to the National Facility team including co-ordinating meetings with both academic and industrial clients, diary management, invoicing, reporting, marketing, social media and supporting the Technical Operations Manager with electronic laboratory management systems. Candidates must have excellent IT, communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to organise and prioritise a busy workload using their own initiative. Experience of working with an internal financial management system (FMS) and/or previous experience of research administration within a university environment would be advantageous. The post is initially for 24 months, but an extension beyond this period is anticipated.

X-ray PDF Applications Scientist (KTP Associate) (411261)
The Continuous Manufacturing and Advanced Crystallisation (CMAC, www.cmac.ac.uk) hub at the University of Strathclyde in partnership with AstraZeneca is seeking to appoint a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Associate in the area of X-ray Pair Distribution Function (PDF) analysis. In particular, the role is focussed on the application of PDF to AstraZeneca materials and the focus of the role is on developing approaches for routine sample preparation, laboratory and synchrotron data collection, PDF analysis, reporting and development of training material to enable and support users to implement successfully this powerful analytical method.

You will have a PhD in a chemistry, materials science, physics, pharmaceutical science or a related discipline with appropriate experience in a collaborative research environment with knowledge in the area of pharmaceutical materials, X-ray scattering, data analysis and solid form characterisation. Practical experience of working with amorphous materials and in the use of laboratory X-ray and/or synchrotron sources and in the analysis and interpretation of data will be advantageous.
You must have excellent verbal and written communications skills with the ability to write clearly and succinctly. You must also be able to work as a member of a team, as well as demonstrate successful track record of research achievement. You should be able to independently develop new concepts in your research, have excellent organisational skills, initiative, and the ability to pay close attention to details. In addition to the KTP core development training, you will have a dedicated training budget of £4,000 to further support your career development. Location of this role, the Associate will be expected to work mostly at AstraZeneca’s Research & Development Campus in Macclesfield, however will be required to work at the University of Strathclyde for a period of time.

The Continuous Manufacturing and Advanced Crystallisation (CMAC) Hub is a world-class centre of excellence for advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing research and training. As an EPSRC Future Manufacturing Research Hub, led by the University of Strathclyde we work in close collaboration with a number of spokes at leading UK academic institutions (Bath, Cambridge, Imperial College, Leeds, Loughborough, Sheffield) and linking with international centres in the US, Europe and Far East. Working in partnership with industry, CMAC’s purpose is to transform the development and manufacture of medicines through advanced design and manufacturing technologies including the development of Digital Twins and MicroFactories. The four key pillars of CMAC’s program are to: deliver high quality manufacturing research; develop the workforce of the future through skills development and training; to drive effective translation of research into industry and, to continue to develop our world leading facilities and lab of the future infrastructure.
This post offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced administrator/coordinator, ideally with experience in a scientific area. The post holder will be the key contact between CMAC and its industry partners, and will work closely with the Technical Translation Manager and Business Development & Translation Manager, and other senior management to support industry partner engagement with the Centre to develop and sustain long-term relationships.
Responsibilities include: key contact with industry partners (e.g. liaise, collate, and organise key milestones and deliverables, and KPIs), create detailed plans designed to attain predetermined goals and quotas, present and report results and emerging opportunities, design and produce communication material, and provide organisational and administrative support for the CMAC Directors.
The post holder will work with the CMAC industry team on strategic issues relating to development, management and delivery of the Centre’s collaborative programmes with industry partners. They will also co-ordinate meetings and workshops and lead preparation of relevant materials and reports.
Candidates must have excellent IT, communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to organise and prioritise a busy workload using initiative. A relevant technical degree and experience of research administration in a university or company environment is desired. Some travel to events in UK and worldwide is likely with this role.
This is an exciting and challenging position which will provide an ambitious and committed candidate with valuable experience within an International leading Research Centre providing a multi-disciplinary, multi-site university and industry collaborative research environment. PhD position - Data-driven approaches for in-line monitoring of particle attributes in chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing processes
Particle processing is widely used in chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing industries. In this context, particle attributes influence processability and are key to the optimisation of product quality. However, despite the high material costs involved, significant process inefficiencies are still common in these sectors. New technologies that improve the monitoring of particle attributes are essential to transform the ability to understand and control pharmaceutical processes and to achieve the reliability and stable operation of other sectors such as aerospace and automotive.
The project will use a combination of experiments, data analytics and simulation to provide more accurate representation of particle attributes from in-line measurements. Data will be captured using state-of-the-art Process Analytical Technologies (PAT) available at the Centre for Continuous Manufacturing and Crystallisation (CMAC), including Particle View Microscopy (PVM), Focused-Beam Reflectance Measurement (FBRM) and Raman spectroscopy. These data streams will inform the development of Machine Learning and Deep Learning models to extract more representative particle size, shape and morphology distributions, as well as solution solid loading. Simulations of the measurement environment will contribute to identifying deviations from ideal scenarios and to providing physical meaning to these anomalies. While extracting information from individual sensors is a challenge in itself, the project will aim to implement data fusion approaches to further enhance in-line quantification of particle attributes and inform more advanced process control strategies.
