Welcome
Welcome to the first edition of our monthly newsletter, CMAC News. We intend to use this newsletter to update our partners and supporters on the wide range of research, training and knowledge exchange activities across the national Centre programme. In this edition we have news on an exciting new capital investment in CMAC, as well as upcoming opportunities to engage with CMAC including our annual open day and the launch of our iCON project funding scheme.

Major award of £34.2m for CMAC
CMAC award of £34.2m for capital investment from HEFCE’s RPIF scheme was announced by the Chancellor, George Osborne on 6th June. This substantial investment will further develop and enhance the leading facilities in our national research programme. With a move into a new £89m Technical Innovation Centre planned for 2014 this award will provide state-of-the-art capabilities for researchers from academia and industry to work side-by-side to accelerate delivery on continuous manufacturing and crystallisation research. Overall funding secured since 2011 is now upwards of £60m. Read more>>

CMAC 2nd Annual Open Day
Following on from the success of last year’s event the 2nd CMAC annual open day will be held on September 12th, at the Glasgow Science Centre. The programme will include talks from invited academic and industry speakers, posters presented by all Centre researchers, exhibitions from a range of world leading technology companies and excellent networking opportunities. iCON project call open
Get involved with our National Centre Research strategy via iCON! Our “iCON project” scheme has recently been launched to stimulate innovation in continuous manufacturing of pharmaceuticals and other fine chemicals through supporting short term feasibility projects. We are inviting proposals primarily in the work-up area of continuous processing from individuals not currently involved in the Centre. Read more>>

Industry update
Thanks to all the partners who contributed to the successful RPIF bid. The open access ethos is a great way to develop capabilities together.
CMAC and the Institute for Manufacturing at Cambridge University is co-ordinating a bid for Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative – deadline October 2013. Any company (large, SMES) who are interested, please contact Craig Johnston.

CMAC researcher shortlisted for CIA Young Ambassador Award 2013
CMAC research associate Thomas McGlone @ the University of Strathclyde has been shortlisted for the prestigious Chemical Industries Association BASF Young Ambassador Award. Thomas is an integral member of the CMAC team, who has worked on several KTA projects involving world leading industrial collaborators. The winner of this premier accolade will be awarded on Thursday 20th June at National Railway Museum, York.

CMAC’s press profile has been on the up over recent weeks, with articles published in The Times, Holyrood Magazine, Chemical and Engineering News and the Specials Chemicals Magazine. Furthermore, RPIF funding news was covered in 99 different press releases including the BBC News, STV online, The Times, The Times Higher Education, Pharma Times and The Manufacturing Chemist. DTC cohort complete first year training
The first cohort of the CMAC DTC has successfully completed their intensive 12 week training programme based at the 7 CMAC universities. Their training concluded at the DTC summer school at Crieff Hydro. The nine pioneering students will now commence their research projects tackling innovative areas of continuous manufacturing research.

Other CMAC news

CMAC co-organised with Royal Society of Chemistry industrial Flow Symposium @ Chemspec Europe in Munich, June attended by over 130 delegates. CMAC research was also presented at the event by the Centre’s Prof Alastair Florence and Dr Jag Srai alongside one of CMAC’s industrial members Dr Chris Price, GSK.
