Profile

I am a John Anderson Research Lecturer in in vivo Biology with particular interests in brain damage and repair. Previously I registered as a Pharmacist in 1992 and obtained my PhD in 1996 at University of Glasgow during which I developed a deep interest in brain damage. I pursued my academic career in stroke research as a postdoctoral researcher and latterly a research fellow at the Wellcome Surgical Institute, University of Glasgow before joining SIPBS in 2007.

My research focuses on making a contribution to understanding mechanisms of brain damage and repair using two strategies namely inflammation and stem cells. I have particular interest in in vivo models of brain damage and in in vivo brain imaging to allow quantitative live cell tracking by multiphoton microscopy at Centre for Biophotonics. Current research programmes include understanding how to promote success of stem cells after stroke (with Robin Plevin) and the roles of endocannabinoids, mast cells and T cells in stroke (with Susan Coker and Catherine Lawrence). Externally, we maintain strong collaborative links with stroke clinicians and with Dr Mike Modo (Kings College London), Professors Mhairi Macrae, Paul Garside, Drs Jim Brewer and Pasquale Maffia (University of Glasgow) and Dr Maria Grazia De Simoni (Milan).

I aim to generate student engagement and research aspirations in Pharmacy and Biomedical Science students and to promote opportunities of science in interdisciplinary areas using techniques ranging from one-to-one supervision, didactic sessions, interactive MCQ and web tutorials.
