tune2fs

Friday 24 February 2012 10:44 am

default on nix drives is to reserve 5% of the file space for root, so that users can't completely fill a disk and lock you out. Obviously this issue is only relevant to root drives (for pure data drives, you could set the value to 0% without the risk of a lock out). The tune2fs command allows this % to be changed. On large disks, this can be a significant amount of file space.

tune2fs -m 3 /dev/sdaN/

The -m flag allows you to change this %, in this case from 5% to 3%. On a 100Gb drive, this still keeps 3Gb reserved space, but frees up an additional 2Gb of space. I've made this change on SPIDER2 (the backup mirror) which has freed up 2Gb or so of disk space.

This Week's Tweaks

Friday 17 February 2012 04:34 pm

Applicants Tool
updated awards to include various extra countries. Added a 'comments' field to allow user to include extra information on overseas awards data. Added 'entry year' to allow indication of year 1 or year 2 entry. Updated stats to give better breakdown of origin of applicants (EU, UK etc) and user can now enter custom values for un/conditional conversion rates.

uLab
can now save and reload lab layout floorplans. Added select/ delete/ delete all function so user can remove selected or all items on floorplan. Updated colour scheme and fixed 'map' to use an image layer instead of an empty wms layer. Not much progress on pop-up (could get it to half work, but interfered with polygon modify tool). Location/Google searches - linking long/lat co-ords to in-database records - associating meta-deta with these objects as they appear on map overlay.

PG Records database
completed 'advanced search' tool for admin level users - allows for complex custom query of PG students. Updated student record to save 'local' start_reg date (copies centrally stored date) if user doesn't input a date on saving.

SIPBS website
added a few more pages/ placeholders to T4 (mostly UG 'study' pages).

Exam paper database
Updated paste tool to strip more MS Word junk out. Question filter logic improved to deal with users not marking questions correctly as used in certain sessions (v1). In v2 system updated to avoid this situation arising by taking required data from exam paper (questions used in exam are auto-marked as used without requiring user intervention).
